What is Reiki?

The energy of love that never ends…(from Reiki for dummies, by Nina L. Paul, PhD)

Touch is increasingly recognized as being essential to human health. Gentle touch shows a compassion that penetrates the surface of our pain and brings about relief. A Reiki practitioner will be sharing with you their connection to the Divine and hold you to that light energetically for your highest healing. Love is all there is. What a beautiful exchange between 2 people.

Reiki is Japanese, Rei is spiritual wisdom, some say life force, and Ki is energy. Mikao Usui (1865-1926) is the man responsible for bringing Reiki into existence. Now there are multiple branches of Reiki worldwide.

No matter where you learn Reiki or where you receive a session it is always:

  • Gentle
  • Harmless
  • Natural
  • Healing
  • Balancing
  • Relaxing- when that is what your body is asking for.
  • Energizing- if your energy is drained.

Reiki is not:

  • Religious, all faiths can practice Reiki
  • Massage or Reflexology
  • A substitute for medical care
  • Magic

The universal energy is available to everyone and once your hands are attuned to the energy you become the conduit for that energy. You can share that “love” with nature, pets, people, and material possessions. There is a program where people will hug a teddy bear and put their loving energy into it and then those teddy bears are given to sick kids for their enhanced healing. It really works and everyone is capable of doing it.

Hospitals are increasingly adding programs that allow patients and their family members to receive Reiki. Patients can get per and post operative treatments that help them heal faster. Nurses that know Reiki are a valuable asset to the patients.

What are the ways to experience Reiki?

  • You can have a session with a Reiki practitioner that has been attuned to the 2nd level or above.
  • You can have a session in a hospital setting.
  • You can become attuned and practice Reiki for yourself.
  • You can become attuned to advanced levels of Reiki so that you can work on your family members.
  • You can receive Reiki from a distance, where the practitioner is not in the room with you.
